First Aid In The Workplace Requirements

What are the are the first aid at work requirements?

First aid in the workplace, according to The Health and Safety Regulations 1981 “require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and people to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.”

Assessment of first aid requirements for your specific workplace

In every workplace there are different requirements, that is where a first aid needs assessment comes in. This is a process that will identify how your first aiders need to be trained, where in the building they need to be and how many of them need to be placed in the building. The number of first raiders that a business needs often boils down to how many people are in the building on average.

There are certain requirements so that the right assistance is available should it be required, to determine the requirements for any given business the following must be considered:

  • The type of workplace
  • The Size of the organisation
  • The accident history of the business
  • If there is general public coming onto the premises
  • What the work patterns are of the staff
  • Travelling and remote worker requirements
  • How far the business is from a hospital
  • Are there any disabilities or people with health problems?
  • When and how annual leave is granted

A first aid requirements assessment is an informal process that requires no written documentation, but if there ever comes a need to justify how that assessment conclusion was reached then it would be helpful to have a written copy of the first aid requirements assessment.
